INTRODUCTION

The Middlesex Public Library maintains the Middlesex Borough Local History Room  (hereby referred to as Local History Room in this document) containing a multidisciplinary collection of local history and archival resources. Resources in the Middlesex Borough Local History Collection Room are not able to be removed from the room, nor from the premises. All items in the Middlesex Borough Local History Collection Room are the property of the Middlesex Public Library. The room creation and continuing maintenance are the responsibility and ownership of the Middlesex Public Library, Library Director, and only volunteers appointed by the Library Director.   

 

MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Local History Room at the Middlesex Public Library is to collect, preserve, catalog, and make accessible materials with historic significance to the creation, and continuing development, of the Borough of Middlesex. These materials are organized and accessible to the public, with the Library holding the materials in trust for future generations.

 

SCOPE
This collection covers the development of Middlesex Borough only; historical information pertaining to Piscataway/Piscatawaytown is included only when it refers to the settlement/creation of Middlesex Borough. Subject areas include early settlers/settlement, business, education/schools, municipal government, individuals, and events that directly affect/affected the birth and growth, and continuation of Middlesex Borough. The Local History collection will acquire items in the following formats: books,diaries, pamphlets, newsletters, bulletins, periodicals, reports, letters, speeches, newspapers, manuscripts, documents, maps, atlases, clippings, postcards, photographs, videotapes VHS/DVDs, electronic materials, paintings, posters.

The Local History Collection does not contain government records, such as City Council meeting minutes or Board of Education meeting minutes, or day‐to‐day business.

The collection houses information in a variety of formats including, but not limited to, books, newspapers, manuscripts, pamphlets, artwork, maps, microfilm, serials, audio cassettes, video cassettes, CDs, DVDs, and other electronic formats. Only one copy is retained of most items. All items will be available electronically; as to the sensitive composition of most historical documents, et.al., most original materials will be protected in display cases.
