  • Integrates various skills and aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and/or Mathematics into ALL ages of programming and collection development – in creative, inventive ways, supporting the Adult Services Librarian in programming as well as creating their own Youth Services programming
  • Orders, catalogs, and maintains Juvenile and Young Adult (under age 18 yrs) print and non-print materials for youth collection using budgetary and priority guidelines
  • Catalogs and maintains youth print and non-print materials via the Dewey Decimal System and patron needs
  • Reviews library collections in print and non-print to weed materials for purposes of discarding due to obsolescence
  • Coordinates services/programs along a staff of the part time youth librarians and volunteers
  • Compiles lists of materials/bibliographies/reading lists according to subject matter or theme as needed externally by patrons or internally by staff
  • Learns basic operation of library automation system(s) and other automation system programs and software (currently SIRSI, SAM, Comprise)
  • Serves children ages 0-17 and their caregivers:
    • Provides advanced reference and readers’ advisory service to children, young adults, parents and other adult caregivers
    • Works closely with Director in planning, promoting, and implementing recreational/education activities/programs for 0yrs – 17yrs, and their caregivers, to encourage literacy and literacy related skills
    • Oversees and supervise youth programs conducted by other presenters
    • Promotes youth library materials based on trends, current events, and/or patron needs via displays, electronic newsletters, book lists, etc.
    • Oversees and manage youth computer workstation activity
    • Collects and maintains statistics to demonstrate library collection and program usage
    • Plans and promotes public relations/marketing/outreach of library services via social media, email, flyers
    • Works on special projects as assigned by supervisor and/or Director.
  • Other non-Youth Services duties may include:
    • Providing backup reference services in the adult department as needed
    • Providing backup to Director as necessary
    • Instructing and/or training staff and/or public to use electronic resources
    • Providing dynamic hands on programming to different ages in STEAM resources and ideas,
    • Supervising adult area and youth areas
    • Supporting and assisting staff with technology
  • Other duties necessary to Library operations as determined by the Director and/or Board of Trustees


  • Degree from accredited MLS program required
  • NJ Professional Librarian Certificate required
  • Prior coursework/experience in service to children and teens, children’s and teen literature, and print and electronic reference resources required
  • Ability to effectively use and demonstrate technology tools including the web, email, electronic databases, e-readers, office applications, etc.


  • Adaptable, fluid, able to work with different personalities with staff and patrons in a positive manner
  • Engaging, able to establish connections with children, parents, young adults, caregivers, etc.
  • Willing and enthusiastic about continuing education, via reading journals, magazines, attending seminars and workshops on new trends in Librarianship, technology, etc.
  • Able to work under pressure and/or manage stressful situations with courtesy and tact
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to communicate and instruct appropriate assignments to subordinates in the use and operation of the library and its resources
  • Ability to provide clear statistical data providing findings, conclusions, and recommendations of programs and library usage and services


Youth Services
Temporary position, November 2021 to approximately mid January 2022
Part Time position


  • Position includes sick time per NJ Sick Leave Law
  • Part time position, 15-20 hours per week
  • Option to join union CWA-Local 1031 AFL-CIO
  • Some Saturdays/night hours as needed.
  • Starting salary: $28/hr, commensurate with experience

The Children’s Department runs a formal volunteer program for teens and tweens during the summertime. Check back in mid May for more information on  what the Volunteer Program will look like this summer.
